The Quest For The Kingdom

By Dakota Boxer-Paki
 Chapter 1: the beginning

I started as an orphan in a house the was way too small  for all of my friends and I. One Day I was chosen to pick my trade, I wanted to be a student at battle school but all they said was that I’m too skinny. I saw the local ranger hand a piece of paper to the baron of this wonderful castle. The ranger had always scared me he had a hood that went all the way over his eyes, you couldn’t tell if he was looking at you. When ever you could see his face the shade from his hood had made it dark so you could really not see his face whenever he is around.

That night I decided to go and see what was on that piece of paper. I went to the great tower and sneaked around all of the patrols and got to a wall that had a few dips in the cracks, the go thing about this spot was it was a blind spot for guards. I climbed the wall to get to the baron's office, about an hour of hanging and climbing I got to the baron’s office. The window was open and the dips had sat right under the window sil. I got into the office and saw  the note I grabbed it and out of nowhere I heard a voice. I looked around but saw nothing until something moved. I ran for the window but it was locked, I ran for the door but something grabbed me. I looked back and saw the ranger, he took me up to the baron and the baron said that he was expecting me to find the note. The baron got note out of my hands and said “do you want to know what is on here” I just nodded my head in fear of me going to be sent to the dungeon under the castle hardly any knows about the dungeon. The baron talked loud. he said that on the it said Will would try and get this note I want him as my apprentice as a ranger.

I had waken up at six o’clock in the morning to report to halt the ranger, I had to travel out to the forest about three kilometers away from the castle, as I  got closer I could see a chain of smoke coming from the left of the woods. I got taught from halt how to be a ranger with the reward of doing dishes or fetching water from the river half a mile away. One morning halt took me to the center of the woods and gave me two knives. He said the big one was to use for close quarter combat and the smaller one was a throwing knife. Halt taught me how to throw the throwing knife and how to use a knife at close range.
After that session I had headed to castle redmont where I had  once lived but now with halt, I had met horace the bully of our orphanage, He was in the trade that wanted(battle school). he tried to bully me once more but I was to quick for him and he got really angry and he tried to strike with his sword and I grabbed my little dagger, He tried as hard as he could but my little tiny dagger overcame his sword and I slapped him silly.
I left to go see halt my master he was sitting on the chairs next to the fire he didn’t look happy.
Halt was accompanied by someone I could not see his face but I noticed the gold and ruby ring on his right hand. This made me wonder if it was royalty so I did not disturb their conversation at went of to my sleeping quarters. But as I opened the door halt had called me over and told me to sit down. I didn't know what to do and I felt a bit of panic had come over me and I just sat there with a frightened look on my face.  Halt told me about the forces approaching from the valley that we had watched over for so long. He told me that I must go find my three close friends, Tom, Quinn and  Arwen.

During that night I had grabbed all of my things, bow, throwing knife, close quarters knife and my green cloak that had hidden me from so many people and things. I had be given a satchel full of food and other useful items. I then set off to find them and discharge them of their work for a long time.
We got to the edge of the forest and I could finally tell them what our quest was that they had been taken for.

chapter 2: the great gate

As my three companions and I travelled through the forest, The Oak King talisman told Quinn,  “The great gateway is masked with snow, With a pass through the mountains to find the great gate.”
“But what does this mean! Where do we go? Why does everything have to be in riddles?”
It was hard to keep warm in the snow as it was, how are my three companions and I going to think straight enough to complete the riddle.
There is my close friend Tom, he’s the swordsman in our group. Then there’s Quinn, the witch apprentice who carries an obsidian dagger. Next is Arwen, the daughter of the king and then me, the Ranger with an oak longbow and quiver made of leather.
Everyone was cold and there is no hope of shelter or food and we had not feed our unicorn an apple for a long time.the only shelter is when we get to the Heaven gateway, the only place for  shelter hundreds of miles away, but only if we could find the mountain pass. There we will find the Gryphon and have it surrender a feather so the awakening of the dead knights would be an item closer.

We had made it out of the forest and finally into open land but we didn't know what was out there. We had made it to a grassy plain where we heard a constant whistling in the wind. Every night when the sun fell the whistling was blocked of by a roar but the roar wasn't a normal lion roar it was a roar of the great wargals but there was only one roar there is meant to be two so that meant that one was watching us or was after a target that his master Morgarath. So after we heard the roars each night we took turns on night watch.  Morning came and we had no rations left to eat we set off to the other side of the plain.  We reached the middle of the plain to find what made the whistling it was a stone dome cover with holes to make the wind make “Music” a nosey whistling made by the ancients. We went inside the dome and found a nest of some sort but then we had thought about the roars of the previous nights and then realized we had to get out fast. We got out of the labyrinth of the nesting and we saw the sunshine, and saw a huge shadow.

The Wargal was there and it was the end of us for sure. We had made a plan in the two seconds we had. I shot an arrow and the others charged at the beast but their weapons were useless our unicorn had heard our yells and he charged its fire horn right into the beast's heart.  We quickly made it out of the plain before the last Wargal arrived.   The end of the plain came into sight and the mountain tops but there were many mountains to choose from to find the right pass. We entered the other side of the forest.  We had not thought of the name of the unicorn until we entered the forest.  The unicorn looked just like the silver thorn trees[quick thorn, fairy thorn] so at that stage we decided to call it Quick Thorn.  We had  traveled until nightfall and we didn't have to worry about the monsters of the night because of the cover of the thorns that surrounded us.

We had started to walk as soon as the sun came up. sometimes we had paths that went the way we wanted and then they were some that didn’t go the way we wanted they to go we had made it halfway to the mountain tops and the moon shone bright and we had gone as far as we could the day and we went to sleep.  The next morning we ate the wargal that had been killed a few days ago. It was still cold but once the wargel had been cooked and eaten we had heated up, we set off on our quest to find the right mountain pass. The ground started to get rocky and we knew we were close to the mountains. the one mountain the stood taller than everyone else had a crack through the middle of it and it looked like the same pass that the talisman showed me in my vision.  The rest of the group felt that the pass was trouble.  They had no choice but to follow me because it was the only pass we had found all day.  As we traveled into the pass the sun shone brighter than ever and I knew it was the right pass but where was the great golden gate as told in legend, the only thing that we had found was a few columns in two lines then at the end of the lines one huge column in each line with a torch to light the way at night and then tom whom was in front of me disappeared.

We decided to wait for Tom to come back which he did after a few minutes he said it was amazing on the other side and he saw the great gate. We headed to the other side after we recovered from the wait to see this great gate everyone was excited to see it but it wasn’t much.  Mixed with the pass to heaven was a pass to  Mt Olympus as well.   Although we had to go to Heaven we also wanted to go to Mt Olympus because a Gryphon is a Greek myth and Mt Olympus is the Greek Heaven. So which one to take?
I asked the Oak King what pass to take but in return he said you do not choose the pass let the pass choose you. No one knew what to do, what it meant? So we just camped out at the gateways. Hermes the messenger god  arrived at our campsite and then we knew what the talisman was saying we traveled to the one hundred steps and started to walk. We got to the gate and it opened as we stood at the foot of it everyone stood in astonishment. All this time every explorer had been looking for the city of gold but I think we just found it.   The two of Kronos`s sons[Zeus and Poseidon] the true gods stood before us and no one said a word. They led us to their great hall and asked why we stood before them.  W...we are afffffffter aaaaa Gryppppphhhhhhon. Tom said. The gods looked stern. THERE IS NO GRYPHON IN MT OLYMPUS! But at that time there was the screech of the Gryphon like an eagle. we set of not listening to the gods next words.  We saw at the top of a cliff the Gryphon but when we got to the top of the cliff the Gryphon didn’t look so happy to see us. I was the only one who had the courage to speak to the gryphon “may you surrender a feather to me”
but all the Gryphon did was fly away.

We camped at that cliff side that night to find in the morning the Gryphon in your faces everyone got a huge fright. The Gryphon decided to surrender a feather and the flew away never to be seen. We headed out of Mt Olympus and to the side where we belong.
On the way out the Oak King talisman told me that the dragon dwells in a cave covered by water.  Our quest was halfway finished.  The next part of our quest is going to be even harder.  How are we meant to get a dragon tooth.
This really is an Impossible Quest...

chapter 3 :the  icy  caves

We got to the forest and in the distance we all saw shadows moving through the woods, the witches of witchwood had been watching and looking at every move we took. They had seen what we we were doing and where we going. One witch that was blind had seen us through the motion of the wind, she knew we were after a dragon and she ambushed us. We woke up in a hollow tree our weapons taken off us except Quinn’s obsidian dagger and my bow. The witch walked into the hollow tree and told us why some had their weapons and some didn’t, obsidian is a stone and is natural, a bow is made of wood, The sword wasn’t aloud because it was made of steel, which the witches did not allow in their sanctum.  Arwen asked the witch where Quick Thorn was,  in return she said that the unicorn is safe in the meadow. Everyone was confused as we were just in a forest and now a meadow was just outside the hollow tree. We could hardly move as the poison that she had blow darted us with, the poison was not out our system. The witch told us to sleep. By morning the the poison was out of our systems and we got up and went to find Quick Thorn.
We had found Quick Thorn in the safety of the witch sanctum and we saddled him up to get ready to leave the witches cover and to the secret pass that the witch had told us so that the forest guardians don’t attack us for saddling a forest animal. Quinn got her map out, we saw that it had the forest that we were in and the only cave that had been shown on the map. just as we had left the forest and in the grass plan the talisman had told us the cave is found on water and made of water, that had made it more easier for us to know it was in water. After a while of walking we started to think about what the water could be could it be snow, ice or actually just water and then we started to think about where it was,Was it in a lake,An ocean,On a mountain or halfway around the world in the arctic.
The map that Quinn had didn’t show the cave anywhere so we decided to go to the nearest town so we could go to the library to get a far spread locations map. There was no town for miles so it took a few days to get there. When we got there the library was on the other side of town and the streets were patrolled by many guards. The bad thing about this town was it was ruled by morgarath. we snuck through the town and broke into the library to find the map after a good look we found it and just in time as well because the guards had seen the smashed window and had entered the library we creeped around them and ran out the door.

We had made it clear from the town and we set off for another adventure for the dragon. we travelled through the night without sleeping and by morning we were all tired but we still thought how can the dragon live in a cave made of ice if it breathes fire. We all traveled through the rest of the day and by nightfall we all fell straight asleep. I had woken up early to keep guard as the rest slept I decided to wake them up about half an hour later, we all packed and set off for what looked to be the centre of gorlan, The rest of gorlan was solid dirt but the century was made of ice the great map was good help. I could not help that we were so close to saving our friends and family, defeating Morgarath and for filling our destiny.

the only thing that was holding us back was where the cave was and what it looked like because the cave is actually caves. We had travelled for about 2 weeks and had made it to the ice oasis and running low from the food given to use from the gods and some of what we had stolen, we had decided to make a limit to what we eat. I had had what I could for the morning and the rest still finishing, the caves towered above the little mountains of snow, this was like a snow desert the wind in the air wasn’t hot it was cold so it was like a desert but not a desert.
We had all seen the caves but because of the cold we couldn’t think straight and it didn’t help when we had no cave or dig in to save us from the snow blizzard, the blizzard had sent us off course but we regain direction when it all cleared up.

we were at the foot of the caves but which one to choose, we had decided on what toms gut feeling told us, because of what had happened at the entrance to mt olympus. He decided to go for the left middle one which was a big mistake we had walked into a cave full of moleworms. (Moleworms are something you do not want to mess with they have six rows of razor sharp teeth they are nine feet tall and can spit acid  balls to a distance of five hundred meters and can travel up to one hundred kilometers per hour under ground.) We ran to the exit of the cave and tried to get to high ground but it was of no use. The moleworms were everywhere they had surrounded us we had nowhere to run…

...At that very moment the dragon that we had all been looking for came flying towards us and defeated the horde of moleworms, we didn’t have time to catch the dragon or ever see what cave he was in. We went to the foot of the cave mountain and then made a decision that maybe the dragons cave is at the top of the cliff, Arwen lead the cliff climbing group and we all went on our adventure to the dragon's cave. We had finally reached the top of the mountain and saw one big cave. The cave was the right size for the dragon, according to Quinn`s magic book  a skull reptar dragon. The dragon had definitely been staying in that cave. we entered the cave that we thought held the dragon to then enter a dome filled with bones and clothes (shredded clothes). We all heard a roar come from the entrance, all of us ducked under the bones. that was bad for  tom because he was afraid of blood, As soon as he ducked down by me next to the bones he fainted. I took a while for tom to wake but by that time we had struck the dragon right beneath the throat. He was goners.
